Treating Gout with Baking Soda

This page about Baking Soda For Gout was first published before 2008. I am re-publishing it here, despite the limited appeal for gout sufferers.

Why limited appeal? As I noted in the original article, baking soda tends to raise blood pressure. There is a high occurrence of high blood pressure amongst gout sufferers, so many simply cannot contemplate it.

Baking soda for gout sufferers is most useful as a method for dissolving or preventing kidney stones, but you must consult your doctor about this.

Baking Soda For Gout: Introduction

Many people find that treating gout by taking baking soda regularly reduces the intensity and frequency of gout attacks – sometimes to zero.

To understand why this works you need to consider the causes of gout.
In the first place, uric acid levels build up to a level that cannot be held in the blood.
Crystallization occurs and uric acid salts are deposited in the joints.
There is no specific level when this happens and some people can have high levels of uric acid (hyperuricemia) without developing gout.
Therefore, you should not simply focus on uric acid levels, but also on other factors.

Can Flax Seeds Lower Uric Acid?

In reviewing my page on Benefits Of Crushed Flax Seeds For Gout, I found a suggestion that flax seeds, usually considered to be a positive way to lower inflammation, might also lower uric acid.

Today’s big question is “Can Flax Seeds Lower Uric Acid?”

The answer has to be a qualified yes. Or, at least an unqualified maybe!

Last year, Tunisian scientists investigated benefits of crushed flax seeds. Though they were looking for glucose lowering and antioxidant effects, especially with reference to diabetes, they had the good sense to also measure uric acid. Their report, “Flax and Pumpkin seeds mixture ameliorates diabetic nephropathy in rats”, includes facts about uric acid lowering, especially where uric acid is raised as a result of kidney problems from diabetes.

Benefit of Flax Seed Oil for Gout

Crushed Flax Seeds
The Best Benefit of Flax Seed Oil for Gout

The best-known benefit of flax seed oil is it’s high Omega-3 fatty acid content. The benefits of crushed or ground flax seed for gout are even better.

Flax seed contains more than 50% Omega-3 fatty acid. This fatty acid (Alpha-Linolenic Acid or ALA) has cholesterol-reducing properties. More importantly, for gout sufferers, ALA is claimed to have some anti-inflammatory properties. I have to say, “claimed” as the studies are less than conclusive. The reaction of the body to fatty acids is very complicated. There are two main types – Omega 6 and Omega 3. For best health there should be a good balance of these. Most diets have too much Omega 6, so taking Omega 3 from flax or fish oil helps restore this balance.

Flax oil is easy to take. Only 1 teaspoon per day provides enough ALA. The oil can be poured on salads. It is also available in capsules. Click to continue reading about flaxseed oil and gout

Black Bean Broth – A Natural Gout Remedy

Imagine a natural remedy for gout that is quick and easy to make.

Black beans are rich in anthocyanins. These natural anti-inflammatory substances are found in cherries, and many other dark berries.

Black bean broth has become a common gout pain cure for many GoutPal readers, since Metamorph kindly introduced it on the gout forum, and so I present this simple recipe for a natural gout remedy.

Black Bean Broth Recipe For Gout Relief

There are 2 common forms of black bean – common or turtle beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) and soybeans (Glycine max (L.) Merr.). Both forms of bean are suitable for the broth.

The recipe is very simple, but involves a lengthy slow boil process, so it is advisable to use a timer so you do not end up with a pan of burned beans.

  1. Rinse 200 grams (7 ounces) beans and remove any grit or other debris.
  2. Cover with 2 liters water and bring to the boil.
  3. Reduce heat, and simmer for 90 minutes.
  4. Strain the liquid, which is what you drink, and throw away the beans.
  5. Allow to cool, and gulp down about 1/2 liter of the broth.

Remedies For Gout

There are lots of different remedies for gout that are used in the various treatments.
Remedies are applied as part of different treatments, which are described in the Medical and Alternative Treatments sections.
The remedies that are listed here are for preventing gout or reducing the risk and severity of future attacks.
I’ve listed pain management remedies in the Pain Relief Gout Remedies section.

In this section, both medical and alternative remedies are listed, including gout home remedies and natural gout cures. Please note that even though alternative remedies may not be as tightly controlled as most drugs, they can still have significant effects on your health, especially if you are also taking prescribed medication. As always, you should consult a qualified medical practitioner before you start the treatment.

Before you start to decide which treatment might suit you, you should know your uric acid level. Also, you must be clear about why and how to lower uric acid, and what you need to reduce it to.

To choose which remedies are best for you, you should study them, noting particularly any side effects. You should also pay attention to how gout remedies react with other conditions and with other remedies.
