I’ve recently been told I had gout. The local government gp’s which I have access to gave me some basic information but I’m a bit confused. I don’t have a follow up for another month so I’d like to try and find any info about this as I can.

The blood test I got showed a result of 588 for my urates. It doesn’t say what units they are, it just shows the number. I asked the doctor for a reference and he told me that 260 – 530 was normal for these figures and that mine was only slightly above the normal levels. I’ve been looking around online for numbers that match these figures but have found no success so far, it would help to give me a clearer picture of my result if I could find them.

Your units are mmol/L, and the reference range you have been given is statistically valid, but medically pointless. Actually, it is worse than pointless – it is dangerous. I’m not sure which sex you are, but the medical equivalent of this useless reference value is to say that it is normal for an adult human to have 1 breast, or 1 testicle. I’m sure you can see the problems of being treated according to that statistic.

You need to be 300mmol/L, or lower. See Uric Acid Levels for more, or use the Uric Acid Concentration conversion calculator.
