Cox-2 Inhibitors & NSAIDs

Click the link above to view the Cox-2 Inhibitors and NSAIDs report. Cox-2 is an enzyme responsible for inflammation and pain. Cox-2 inhibitors are a type of Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drug (NSAID) that specifically target this enzyme.

The report was published as:

Title:
Drug Class Review on Cyclo-oxygenase (COX)-2 Inhibitors and Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs).
Authors:
Roger Chou, MD
Published:
Nov 2006

It is a summary of 26 pain relieving drugs, many of which are prescribed for gout. It includes an assessment of risks for stomach and heart problems, which are associated with longterm use of COX inhibitors.

Though pain relief is important to gout sufferers, it is unwise to rely on it for long periods. Pain relief for gout sufferers is best for short term use during the first few months of uric acid lowering treatment.

I include full details of all methods for relieving gout pain, and for lowering uric acid, in my Gout Treatment Guidleines.
