What Is Uric Acid? Vital Friend Or Deadly Foe?

I get asked every day, “What is uric acid?”

Chemically, it is a very weak organic acid, but that does not help you understand it, or it’s relationship with gout.

Medically, it is thought to be vital to our health, and our ability to stand upright.

But our uric acid control mechanisms are complicated, and if it gets out of balance, high uric acid leads to gouty arthritis. And worse.

Uricosuric Foods are Natural Uricosuric Agents

Uricosuric Foods Natural Uricosuric Agents is part of a series about gout cures from the world of natural products. See Natural Xanthine Oxidase Inhibitors for the first installment.

Natural Uricosuric Agents that Reduce Uric Acid, the Underlying Cause of Gout

Effective treatment of gout starts with addressing its underlying cause- uric acid.  Ultimately, lowering uric acid to normal levels is the goal. Depending on its severity, gout may require long-term treatment consisting of xanthine oxidase inhibitors and/ or uricosurics.

To explain, Xanthine Oxidase Inhibitors (XOIs) decrease uric acid production. But I cover natural XOIs elsewhere. So now we look at how uricosuric agents work.

Symptoms Of Gout Survey Results

The main symptoms of gout are usually considered to be a red, swollen, extremely painful big toe.

Other gout sufferers and I have even had a gout diagnosis turned down because we did not present these common symptoms.

Yes, a swollen big toe is a common symptom of gout, but as we will see, it only affects just over half of gout sufferers.

Probenecid in Gout Treatment

Probenecid is a uricosuric and kidney blocking agent. It inhibits the re-absorption of uric acid in the kidneys, thus increasing the excretion of uric acid in urine and decreasing urate levels in the blood. This stops new crystals forming, and helps old crystal deposits to dissolve [1].

It is most useful to under-excreters of uric acid, and doctors will usually assess this by analyzing urine collected over a 24-hour period. It is also best to run kidney and liver function tests before and during probenecid therapy.

Casein For Healthy Uric Acid

Here is another article on natural gout cures, explaining casein, a milk protein, and its role in gout control.

Casein Protein as a Potent Natural Agent to Support Healthy Uric Acid Levels

The key to avoiding gout and other related diseases like kidney stones and heart disease is to address the underlying issue of high uric acid. High uric acid is referred to “hyperuricemia“. As you can see from the graph below, there is a high correlation between UA levels and several life-threatening diseases.

There are two approaches that physicians can take to reduce UA levels – promote excretion or block its formation.

Probenecid Side Effects for Gout Patients

Probenecid side effects are rare.

But you must take some precautions to avoid common problems.

How does Probenecid Work?

Before you look at side effects of probenecid, you should understand how probenecid works. Because it was developed to improve the effects of penicillin by restricting its excretion through the kidneys. So it has significant effects on many compounds by either restricting or encouraging excretion rates in urine.

Importantly, if you are taking any other medications or supplements, including herbal medicine, you must tell your doctor. Then this will help your doctor determine if the side-effects are down to probenecid. Or if the other compounds are involved. Because if they are, you can often overcome side-effects by adjusting the dose of the other medicine.

Gout Causes: Why Does It Matter?

Gout causes are often ignored by gout patients and physicians alike.

There is focus on treating gout symptoms, and what seems to me, an obsession with diet. However, gout causes are often overlooked, or you might get some obvious references to weight or diet control.

It is important to understand gout causes. Because it is your best chance of curing gout. I know I have said elsewhere that gout cannot be cured – only controlled. That is true for primary gout, but if another problem is causing secondary gout, then controlling that first problem may cure gout.

Before I look at different gout causes, I need to make an important distinction.

Gout Causes Or Causes Of Gout Flares

Many people talk about causes of gout flares, or gout triggers.
