If you are looking for information about food to eat with gout, such as soup for gout, please note that I have moved the detailed nutrition tables to a new website.

Why?

Because such detailed nutritional analysis is beyond the scope of this gout support website.

Before you start looking at which individual foods avoid gout, you need a good gout management plan, and a thorough understanding of how food affects gout. At the very least, you must read the information on planning an alkalizing gout diet menu. Then if you still want to assess PRAL values of soup, or any other food or drink, you can browse my Acid-Alkaline Soups, Sauces, and Gravies Food Chart.

I have retained the former introduction to the soups PRAL chart...

Soups And Sauces Are Good Food To Eat For Gout

Every gout sufferer I know seems obsessed with what food to eat for gout.
It's not surprising as most medical advice starts with "avoid high purine food...".
But purines are not as significant to gout patients as a healthy, well balanced diet.

If you are looking for purine information, please see the Purine Rich Foods Chart, but before consulting that table of food purine content, you should understand How Purines Affect Gout.

The soups, sauces and gravies that make up the list on this page, are mainly good examples of well balanced foods. Most are prepared from a mixture of foods from different groups. And so most of these foods are neither strongly alkaline or strongly acidic.

However, this does not automatically make them all good food to eat for gout. Some sauces are particularly concentrated. Despite my emphasis on pH balance, you should also limit foods that contain concentrated meat extracts.

Elsewhere I've advised that you avoid gravy and meat stocks. This is because these can be a highly concentrated purine source. Normally, purines are not a major factor in a well balanced diet, and are unlikely to raise uric acid levels. However, frequent intake of gravy or other concentrated meat stock sauces can have an impact.

This is a personal choice for me, and I've found it easier to replace strong gravy with other sauces. If you do not want to give up gravy, then I advise that you at least balance it with alkalizing foods. In fact, many of the commercial gravy mixes have other ingredients that do this for you.

You might eat some of the food items from this list as a complete light meal or snack. If that is the case, then good food to eat for gout is in the alkaline columns.

Where you are eating these foods as part of a meal, remember to add all the items from different food groups to achieve an overall alkalizing meal. Note that many of the larger values relate to dry mixes and extracts. You normally take these in small quantities so reduce the 100g values accordingly. Please read my explanation of Potential Renal Acid Load (PRAL) for gout sufferers before you look at detailed food information.
