If you are looking for information about drinks or food that causes gout, such as salmon or tuna, please note that I have moved the detailed fish nutrition tables to a new website.

Why?

Because such detailed nutritional analysis is beyond the scope of this gout support website.

Before you start looking at individual gout foods to avoid, you need a good gout management plan, and a thorough understanding of how food affects gout. At the very least, you must read the information on planning an alkalizing gout diet menu. Then if you still want to assess PRAL values of oysters, shrimp, or any other food or drink, you can browse my Acid-Alkaline Finfish and Shellfish Products Food Chart.

I have retained the former introduction to the beverages PRAL chart...

Fish Isn't Food That Causes Gout

Does food that causes gout include fish?

Many people think that fish, as a high purine food, might cause gout.

It's much more important to look at your whole diet.

Include fish in the right proportions, and you'll be in the swim.

If you are looking for purine information, please see the Purine Rich Foods Chart, but before consulting that table of food purine content, you should understand How Purines Affect Gout.

This table covers Finfish and Shellfish Products. Like most meat food groups, all these foods tend to make the body acidic. That does not make them bad - they just need to be balanced with alkaline foods from other groups.

Don't look at the table and think that all fish is food that causes gout. Think about a type of fish that you enjoy eating. Then select alkalizing foods from other tables to produce balanced meals. Make sure your meal is alkaline overall.

As with all food, the secret is not to overeat, especially not with one particular food. Keep fish portions small, and balance them with vegetables. You'll soon scale new heights on a diet with no food that causes gout.

Please read my explanation of Potential Renal Acid Load (PRAL) for gout sufferers before you look at detailed food information.
