Cherry Juice - Not a Cure for Gout?
The FDA has issued warnings to several companies marketing products based on cherry juice and cherry extracts. The warnings relate to claims in advertisements and websites. They warn that the claims cause the products to be classified as drugs not foods, so they must meet drug regulations. I.e. if you say your product is a cure for gout (or any other medical condition) then you'd better be able to prove it.
They are not warning against the use of cherry juice or other cherry based products. More on this on my cherry juice page.

Atkins Bankruptcy - A Cure For Gout?
News that Atkins Nutritionals have filed for bankruptcy is being met with glee in many quarters. Fears about negatative effects of the Atkins diet have led at least one person suing the company.
"for everyone, high levels of saturated fat and protein can increase the risk of gout, kidney and liver disease, osteoporosis and breast and colon cancer", reports Kate Santich in the Orlando Sentinal.
GoutPal Comment:
Quite why anyone ever thought that the Atkins, and similar low carb diets would ever be healthy is beyond me. If you want to lose weight, eat less (smaller portions), exercise more, and keep your metabolic rate up (eat regularly - snack on fruit if you're hungry between meals). See the diet section for more advice about diet as a cure for gout.

Savient Pharmaceuticals Expect Phase 3 Trial of Puricase(R) to Commence in First Quarter of 2006
The Company expects to initiate the Phase 3 program for Puricase during the first quarter of 2006. In May of 2005, Savient reported positive top-line Phase 2 clinical trial results for Puricase. Results demonstrated efficacy in reducing uric acid levels and indicated appropriate dosing for Phase 3. Additionally, during the Phase 2 study there were encouraging anecdotal reports of clinical benefits appearing within the 3-month study period, such as eradication of gout tophi and improvements in joint function and the patients' sense of well being. These outcomes will be studied formally in Phase 3, which could provide, for the first time, the first basis for a disease-modifying clinical benefit in patients with severe gout.
Christopher Clement, President and Chief Executive Officer of Savient commented. "Thus far, Puricase has demonstrated encouraging results and we remain confident in its novel therapeutic potential to treat severe refractory gout."
About Puricase
Puricase is a polyethylene glycol ("PEG") conjugate of recombinant porcine uricase (urate oxidase) for the treatment of patients with severe gout for whom conventional therapy is contraindicated or has been ineffective. The Company estimates approximately 35,000 to 50,000 patients in the United States. In February 2001, Savient received FDA Orphan Drug designation for Puricase.
GoutPal Comment:
"refractory gout." DEFINITION:. Gout which is resistant to treatment. Only time will tell if this new drug is going to provide some long awaited relief. Until I can report more about the trials of this drug, please see the treatments section for other drugs and treatments promoted as gout cures.

Suntory and Two Universities Announce that Moderate Whisky Drinking May Help Prevent Gout and Hyperuricemia
GoutPal Comment:
Whisky as a cure for gout sounds too good to be true. A whisky company announces this 'research' claiming magical ingredients - 1-Formylpurogallol and ellagic acid.
I won't bother printing the rest of this press release until I'm certain it's genuine. It's easily found on the net - it's the only reference (besides this one) to "1-Formylpurogallol"
Sorry for being sceptical if it turns out to be true. I'd better do a little research of my own - where's that bottle of Scotch gone! I'll let you know my findings with other effects-of-alcohol.
