Causes Of Gout
and Gout Triggers

The causes of gout are excess uric acid and the crystals that form from it.
But is it that simple?
How much is too much? How do I get rid of the excess? What triggers a gout attack?

In this section I show

  • How uric acid causes gout.
  • How excess uric acid occurs.
  • How excess uric acid leads to gout pain.
You will see that many factors lead to excess uric acid and more factors affect how this leads to pain.

When you understand the causes of gout you can begin to recognize factors that can trigger, prolong or fix a gout attack. I cover fixing gout problems in the Medications, Alternatives, Pain Relief and Prevention sections.

The first two pages in this section relate to uric acid.
Does Hyperuricemia Hurt? It Probably Will Sometime
Hyperuricemia causes gout. It's simply too much uric acid, but it's not always simple. Why does it happen? Why worry if it doesn't hurt? Managing hyperuricemia properly avoids long term problems.
Uric Acid Crystals - Two Ways To Hurt
Uric acid is good for you! But not when excess turns to crystals. Uric acid crystals hurt when you get them. Fixing them can cause pain again. Understanding these 2 causes of gout pain helps manage it

Causes of Gout Pain

Excess uric acid is the basis of pain, but the important thing for managing gout is understanding what triggers uric acid problems. The rest of this section is devoted to identifying possible gout triggers. Most gout flares are caused by a combination of one or more factors. The causes of gout are unique to you. Factors that trigger a gout flare in one person may be perfectly OK for someone else.

My purpose is to identify common triggers so that you can assess if they apply to you. I've identified a number of these, and I'm compiling a list that you will be able to vote on. For now, please use the form in the Your Gout section to add your gout trigger.
