Gout Pictures: A Study In Pain And Misery
Gout Pictures
Gout pictures paint a thousand words.
Some depict gout pain in a way no words can describe.
Others are not particularly gouty, but illustrate different aspects of gout to help you understand it.
The images below have come from various sources, for which I am truly grateful. If you click the small image, you will go to the full sized original.

Side Effects Of Allopurinol
For this image, I wanted to convey the balancing act required when prescribing allopurinol to patients with impaired kidney function. On the one hand, too much uric acid probably induces kidney problems, but on the other, too much allopurinol can result in the deadly Allopurinol Hypersensitivity Syndrome.
The gout research I was writing about was subtitled “walking the tightrope between adequate urate lowering and adverse events”, which prompted me to seek out a tightrope image.
Searching flickr gave me the background tightrope image I needed, and I simply pasted some cropped images in from public sources.
My thanks go to tim_ellis at flickr for this tightrope image.
Find A Rheumatologist
When I searched for an image of a rheumatologist, nothing jumped out as being particularly inspiring. However, I noticed that many photographs showed people looking at x-ray images.
Then I found this x-ray image that shouts (to me at least) “If you want to find a rheumatologist, put on your x-ray specs.”
My thanks to jules_lewis at flickr for this wonderful image. He’s done many more brilliant pictures.

Gout Pain
Gout damages bones, but it is not easy to see this happening. X-ray images will show serious damage, but it is then too late to do anything about it.
This image shows just how serious gout can be, especially when pain relief is viewed to be more important than uric acid lowering therapy.
The image is built from two CT Scans of a suspected gout patient from DSCT, which are part of an interesting case study[1] (not the one that I based my gout pain page on).
My sincere thanks to everyone who has supplied images that I can use. Your gout pictures go a long way to making GoutPal.com the best gout resource on the Internet.
I love receiving pictures from you, so if you have some, please tell me about your gout pictures on the gout forum, and I will provide instructions for how to get them to me.
